Angélica Chavarro

Landscapes of thought

Noise. Noise inside and outside. The thoughts that spring and the information we constantly receive are bursts of noise in the mind, and art is a forceful materialization of them. Artworks are unending sources of words, dialogues and questions. Angélica Chavarro belongs to a trend of artists whose work, instead of causing uproar, creates a space for contemplation, a shelter for the viewer, who is lured into a state of meditation, silence and stillness. Chavarro ponders whether it is possible to encourage the viewer to inhabit their own inner experience by suspending the constant flow of ideas. Using embroidered layers of white interlining and soft light, we enter a space-time that is suspended both inwards and outwards, where there is no judgement, no action, no attempt at endless talk. Only silence. There we begin a dialogue with our inner self.

Biography

Angélica Chavarro earned her Master's Degree in Visual Arts. After her academic studies she developed an interest in self-knowledge and personal development and trained as an instructor in meditation techniques, including yoga and kundalini, among others. Following this path, after a brain surgery in 2016, she discovered a meaningful bond between her creative process and her concerns about the relationship between body, mind and spirit. Since then, she has been particularly interested in a visual approach to the issues of mindfulness, dimensions of thought and meditation, principles that guided her inquiry into the psychological dimension of art as a contemplative practice and as a channel for spiritual expression.

Her most recent work puts an emphasis on the mental attitude of viewers when facing the works, underscoring today's need for self-observation and silence to acknowledge the essence of our being, drawing the conclusion that the world is in irrefutable need of spirituality. In her most recent solo show, Silence's Intentions (Onsite Installation - FUGA 2019) she laid out a space that referenced the stages of meditation, offering a sensory experience to the visitor.

Her inquiries and her reflections make use of different media and practices, such as painting, drawing, installation and onsite intervention. She has taught creation workshops and she is currently devoted to her artistic practice.

Her work has been shown in her own country and abroad, in individual and group shows, in museums and galleries
